The obverse carries no portrait: it is a multi-line inscription commemorating the founding act. It reads "SE COLOCO LA PRIMERA PIEDRA POR EL EXMO. SEÑ. PRESIDENTE CIUD. ANTONIO LOPEZ DE SANTA-ANNA EN 27 DE SETIEME DE 1843."
