1 oz Libertad Silver 2016

The 2016 Libertad is one troy ounce of pure silver (31.103 g of .999 silver) struck by the Casa de Moneda de Mexico (the Mexican Mint). It is investment silver, not a circulating coin: it has no printed face value, and its price is set by the silver itself. The reverse shows the Winged Victory (the Angel de la Independencia, Mexico City's Angel of Independence monument) on her pedestal, with the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes in the background. The obverse carries the National Coat of Arms at center, surrounded by the historic coats of arms of Mexico, one of the most beloved reverses in the Libertad Onza series.

On rarity, watch out for the myth. The 2016 BU (brilliant uncirculated) mintage was 1,437,500 pieces, the highest since 1992 according to official Mint data. It is a common year in the standard version, so its value is basically that of the silver it contains. The Proof (13,250) and Reverse Proof (1,700) are a different story: those are genuinely scarce and command more.

As a value reference: since it carries one troy ounce of .999 silver, the BU version is worth roughly the silver spot price plus a small minting premium. With silver between 1,400 and 1,700 MXN per ounce in 2026, the uncirculated piece hovers around that range, a bit above it. The Proof from this year trades higher due to its low mintage. 1 troy oz Silver Libertad 2016 Regular BU

This piece is the 1 troy oz Silver Libertad, struck by the Mexican Mint in 2016 in its Regular BU version.

Technical data. It contains 31.1 g of pure silver, .999 fineness, and measures 40 mm in diameter. On the reverse it bears the effigy of the Angel of Independence, chosen by Banxico as the official symbol of the series since 1981. On the obverse appears the National Coat of Arms in its pre-1969 version, alongside other historical coats of arms as an identity mark of the family.

Role within the set. It is the flagship piece of the series. Its annual mintage is the highest of the whole set and it is the official bullion reference of Mexico. Collectors and physical silver investors always hunt this denomination first.

Context of the year. In 2016 Enrique Peña Nieto governed. The 25th anniversary of the fractional set (1991-2016) was commemorated. Silver closed at 15.99 USD per troy ounce.

Regular BU finish. The Regular finish, cataloged by Banxico as satin or BU, is obtained with dies without special polishing. The result is an even matte shine across the entire surface, without mirror contrast between fields and reliefs. It is the traditional bullion finish: bought for its weight in pure silver plus a modest die premium. It is the version collectors seek to build the complete set by year without decapitalizing on every piece.

Mintage. Banxico reported in its official tables a mintage of 713,689 pieces for this combination of fraction, year and finish. That number is the basis for measuring the relative scarcity of the piece within the program.
